Platform: Windows (All Versions)

Review by George Norman (Cybersecurity Editor)

The ZeroTier One software carries the tagline “network virtualization everywhere.” That’s because you can use this software to quickly create a virtual private cloud network. Once you have the virtual network up and running, you can use it to share files, to collaborate with coworkers, to play games, and so on.

ZeroTier One is available for multiple platforms: Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux.
ZeroTier One provides support for Windows 7 and newer (32- and 64-bit versions). Windows XP and Windows Vista are not supported.
ZeroTier One provides support for OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and newer (32- and 64-bit versions).
ZeroTier One provides support for Linux. It should work on any modern Linux distro. It has been confirmed to work on Debian, Ubuntu, CentOS, Fedora, Arch Linux.

To get ZeroTier One up and running on a PC powered by Windows 7 or newer, you will have to go through a standard installation process. This means you will have to download and run an installer; then, when the setup wizard shows up, you must click through the instructions it presents. Please note that during the installation process you will be asked to install the ZeroTier One virtual Ethernet port driver.

When you’re done installing ZeroTier One and you launch the application for the first time, you will be presented with a Quick Start window. This window very nicely presents ZeroTier One’s interface. It tells you that your computer’s address is displayed in the bottom left hand corner, it tells you that you can join a network by entering its ID from the bottom right hand corner, it presents other useful info about the interface.

Focusing on the functionality now, here’s what you can expect to get from ZeroTier One: create a global provider-independent virtual private cloud network; create a virtual network and collaborate with others; create a virtual network and play games; create a private network for your mobile or distributed organization; make network tools P2P. How does ZeroTier One work? It works by emulating standard switched Ethernet over a peer to peer network. After you create a virtual network, you PC will use a virtual network port to connect to a virtual switch.

ZeroTier One is free and open-source software released under a GNU GPL (General Public License).

Create a virtual LAN to remotely collaborate with colleagues, create a virtual network and play LAN games with friends. These are just two examples that emphasize ZeroTier One’s usefulness.

Pros

ZeroTier One is available for multiple platforms: Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. Installing ZeroTier One on a Windows PC is an effortless task. A handy Quick Start window shows up when you launch ZeroTier One for the first time and it nicely presents ZeroTier One’s interface. Use ZeroTier One to create virtual networks. ZeroTier One is free and open-source software.

Cons

None that I could think of.
